How to DIY NO SEW costume Felt Wings for toddlers or adults

Why not DIY No sew costume Felt wings for halloween? Felt is cheap, I bet you have a wire hanger somewhere (I had to hunt for one, cause if you read my Capsule Wardrobe post you know we aren’t exactly a dry-clean-only kind of house) and you know you like an excuse to fire up your glue gun. A quick and easily modifiable felt costume project perfect for halloween or holiday celebrations.

The first wings I made for the boys were just ribbons on a stick. They pretty quickly asked for wings the “COULD WEAR”. I was happy for them to have a quick an easy halloween idea – they haven’t dressed up since they were 18 months old and they dressed up like the stuffed fox I wish wasn’t in our house – and I’m ready to go all out for halloween.

I’m especially proud of how my fancy-dancy naptime Felt Wings turned out

I decided on a style similar to the Pegasus in Fantasia or My Little Pony. My twins love Fantasia; I was shooting for a more cartoony aesthetic. That way I could focus on the overall look rather than fussing with detail work.

This could easily be modified to be dragon, bird, angel, or other wings – how to make felt wings includes all kinds of winged creatures. The two color style (again, reminiscent of cartoon wings) give it depth and visual appeal without having to go overboard with detail work. For a no sew costume this fit the bill perfectly.

Jacket used to measure length and size for no sew costume wings
Rather than fuss with a pattern I used one of my twins’ jackets to decide on wing length and proportions.

Because I knew I would be sandwiching two layers together I wasn’t particular about marking and altering my design with a marker. Rather than “Cut 2” I decided to fold the felt along the middle and cut both left and right side at the same time connected in the center along the crease.

Felt sticks to itself pretty well, but I still pinned the feathers. This made cutting easier.

You can see here the three component pieces. I love how they look like a video game logo. You can clearly see the crease.

Three pieces show each layer and layout of where glue gun will secure bones in place
For the ‘bones’ of the wing, I used a straightened wire hanger. I cut each feather vein to length and secured it to the felt using my glue gun. Because it would be covered with the other layer of felt I was generous with the glue.

Sandwiching the bones between the two layers of felt. By using the glue gun my no sew costume was fast and easy.

I knew this project had to get banged out during nap time Wings were going to be like so many other Fort Birthday Projects. So I had to keep my felt wings streamlined (get it?).

Detail shot of DIY easy no sew wings.
I used wide elastic for the straps, but I was WAAAY too generous. Thus the hazard of crafting during nap time. So I used some double sided velcro strap to fasten them together across the kids’ chests.

This chromatic design lends itself nicely to costumes based on regular clothes. Toss a hoodie on and ‘poof’ you’ve got a costume. Or, if you are my twins, toss it on ANY time or ALL the TIME and POOF you are a pegasus.

This guy is willing to be a pegasus any old day. We just started watching Dragon Rescue Riders so I think it’s only a matter of time before they are dragons.

What you need for your no sew costume wings

  • A yard of Felt – I used two colors to make my design
  • Glue Gun – always have a burn proof surface to rest it on, and keep a bowl of water nearby in case you drip on fingers or hand
  • Elastic, ribbon, or fabric for straps
  • Wire Hanger – straighten with pliers and cut to length
  • Pliers, scissors, pins, markers for decoration
