Coordinating, not matching. Two years of Twin Fashion
Different from the start – Coordinating, not matching
My twins were born at 32 weeks. One weighed 4lbs. One weighed 2lbs 10 ounces. They looked radically different; so from the beginning, it was easy for us to think of them as individuals. We knew for a fact they are not identical once they were blood typed. But they were coordinating.
The nurses in the nicu got in on the of treating them as coordinating, not matching. Preemies are too small for regular hospital baby hats and cannot regulate their body temperature well. So volunteers make and donate scores of tiny little hats. * The nicu nurses took it as a point of pride to find the boys pairs of hats that went together without matching. Those tiny little pairs of hats are some of the few treasures I kept from their Preemie days.

You can see how we hardly even thought of them as twins from the start. They were brothers born on the same day.
So, I give you Two Years of our Twin fashion

“POW” At three months old they were swimming in newborn onesies. But we were finally able to show off some of the fun things they were given. We got several ‘Batman’s so sometimes they were Batman and Other Batman. But we rarely dressed them identically.
Sometimes the coordination was theme rather than specific coordinating pieces

A good example of our thematic outfits. Blue Stripes. Fun Fact: I took this pic while sheltering in an interior bathroom during a tornado warning.

These beautiful kimono onesies were gifted to us as a set. They were soft as butter.

Burt’s Bees makes divine baby clothes from organic cotton. This fair isle suit paired perfectly with the monochromatic plaid. Sometimes we would switch up the hats. Check out these Burt’s Bees sets on Amazon that are RIPE for coordination.

At six months we called them the Forehead and the Cheeks. Here we selected rompers we thought were fitting for a wedding weekend on Cape Cod.
Similar not the same

We were lucky enough to be gifted enough hand-me-downs to keep our guys in clothes for more than a year. These Xmas sets came from separate families. We added the details of the brown booties with the gingerbread man and the gray booties with the gray and green striped leggings. BTW – the zutano Booties are just the very very best. They couldn’t pull them off and they wore beautifully.

Little Easter Bunnies, both in overalls. Look at those little teethers! And You can’t really see here. But J had his first real face plant at the park right before Easter Weekend.
Complementary

The summer they were 1.5 they were both on the move and I don’t have many pictures of them together that aren’t blurred. These Big Elephant rompers were favorites.
Akin, not alike.

Pictures with Santa didn’t go so well that year, but the boys worked their GQ angles in their Xmas outfits. This picture was the weekend before J had eye surgery to correct his strabismus.
Complementary Outfits have become our favorite. Not matching. But Working as a unit.

Shoes were an exception. At the time they demanded matching shoes – these crocs have a velcro closure and were perfect for novice walkers and runners. And certain items they want matching these days (coats, especially).

Many times it is easy to appease them with pajamas. These hoodies were part of a pajama set – which seem to come exactly how we like them. You can almost see underneath the sweat shirts their similar striped shirts

We had a cold wet spring and we didn’t have a ton of opportunities to wear some things – These rompers only saw one use before they outgrew them. Look at those cheesy smiles.
companions not comparable

This is a fun example of how two outfits can not match at ALL but go together. I can’t explain it. But it works
We Plan things these days as pairs of outfits and who ever picks first can select his outfit. But there are some things that are K’s shirts or J’s shorts for reasons that are their own. I haven’t quite figured it out yet.

But wait until you see this. George & Georgette make coordinating but not matching sneakers. They are absolutely perfect and you are going to die when you see the pics on my instagram.
