11 TV Shows to Stream while pumping
My streaming services were sort of my best friends when I was pumping. Here are some of the TV shows to stream that I loved for passing the time while pumping. I trend toward comedies. and obvs. I like sci-fi fantasy, but escapism matters when you are connected to a breast pump. “1 Hour” shows to stream while pumping
Rogelio De La Vega is one of my favorite TV characters ever. Brooke Shields has a ridiculously hilarious arc. And Yael Grobglas as Petra is a comedy genius. I laughed, I cried.
Jane the Virgin – I didn’t know what to expect from this show. Not even a little bit. It was funnier, more satyrical, and interesting than I expected. Don’t go in with any preconceived notions and hold on for the ride. Five Seasons of 19-22 episodes at 40 min a piece gets you a lot of pump time.
There is some great information for first-time moms woven into the show about post-partum depression and even pumping. Shows to Stream while pumping, Jane the Virgin, Available on Netflix This is the top of my list of TV shows to stream while pumping because of the content and the FUN. This show is non-stop fun.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – It’s hard to describe this show. A musical romp through the increasingly poor decisions of a highly successful but barely functioning woman. Can you just trust me? If you like comedy and can tolerate a musical, this is a must-watch. The musical numbers are stunningly crafted and adorably tongue-in-cheek. One of those shows I was actually sad when it ended. Four Seasons (13 – 18 episodes) at 42 minutes.
Tenderly inclusive racially and with regards to gender identity, this show contains one of the most accurate depictions of borderline personality disorder ever done on television. I know an odd choice for my list of TV shows to stream while pumping, but the musical numbers and buoyant energy can make short work of a pumping session.
Eric Northman, Vampire, hottie, and if you stick it out to the last season, an incredible Brendan Walsh impersonator.
True Blood – HBO’s Vampire epic based on the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mysteries. Filled with male and female eye candy. It’s trash, but the best kind of high production-value trash. 81 episodes over 7 seasons. It’s lots of content and fun. My sister actually watched some of these through her second labor. Are you a mother of dragons? Just don’t be the mother of all B*tches, Circe. I could relate to both being willing to mount an army to fight for their children.
Game of Thrones – HBO’s epic is engrossing. You love it or you hate it. But it’s hard to look away and makes you feel like a really GOOD mother the entire time. Like really REALLY REALLY good. The Best mother ever. Game of Thrones, available on HBO Now. Costumes. Drama. Sex. Violence. Even some breast milk jokes.
Alright. Can you hang with real sci-fi, like super geeky? Cause Supernatural has 327 forty-minute episodes. Another in my series of series with bad moms (and dads). Supernatural on Netflix. So much content. Carry on My Wayward Son. Brotherly Love. Hard Rock and modern mythology. This goes deep with so many endearing characters.
Honorable mention goes to The Magicians (available on Netflix) – I didn’t actually know about this TV show to stream while pumping when I was pumping, but LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Nerdy. Well produced. It has some amazing ability inclusive moments, pretty costumes, and a few amazing musical numbers. Imagine Harry Potter goes to grad school, ends up in Narnia, and faces world-ending repercussions all with sex, drama, and snappy banter. These are characters I want to be friends with in real life if only I was cool enough.
I’m a fashion junkie, so the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel would be worth watching even with the sound off. A character study of a wife and mother trying to find herself in a world that wants to define her solely as a wife and mother.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – Back to escapism, this time in the form of “Thank god we didn’t have babies in the 60s”. Amazon Prime’s story of a disenchanted housewife becoming a stand-up comic. Dresses! Girdles! Archaic social notions. A quick cruise through technicolor life.
30 minute TV Shows
Dylan Gelula (from Shameless) has a great side role as the spoiled rich girl.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – What happens when a kidnapped cult victim escapes and moves to New York City? Kimmy Schmidt explores this idea with compelling stories and quick-paced comedy. If you liked 30 Rock jump in with both feet. Funny the whole time. 51 30 min episodes that encourage you to embrace positivity. One of the first Netflix originals, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Arrested Development – 84 thirty-minute episodes of nonstop jokes. Another show, with Lucille Bluth demonstrating at every turn what NOT to do as a mother, that makes you pretty darn sure you are a better parent. Jason Bateman heads the ensemble cast of comedy geniuses. Shortlived on broadcast television, more jokes per minute than people were ready for, makes quick work of a 20-minute pumping session. Available on Netflix, Arrested Development.
Santa Clarita Diet – Okay, I realize that I have some weird choices on this list. But probably none weirder than a suburban comedy about a zombie cannibal mom. Only 30 episodes, so it doesn’t have a lot of staying power. You need to be able to tolerate the gore, but if you can look past the buckets of blood and vomit… totally worth it. Santa Clarita Diet, available on Netflix. I’m in love with the relationship between the Hammond Family. And the quirky neighbors trying to unravel the mystery of why the Hammonds are just a little bit off.
Schitts Creek – Another quick comedy about a wealthy family that falls on hard times. David and Alexis Rose are siblings dealing with life in rural America light-years away from their spoiled California upbringing. Endearing and funny. Schitts Creek on Netflix. Another challenging but endearing family.
Exclusively Pumping can sometimes be the only time you get off your feet. It also is sometimes the only time you can watch something that isn’t Daniel Tiger. Doing something affirming can help while you are Exclusively Pumping, might as well catch up on some of these awesome shows. ream while pumping.
