What is Fort Birthday?
Fort Birthday was a cardboard play fort I built for my twins during nap time on their first birthday. I made it out of miscellaneous boxes and packing tape. Making it is one of my most satisfying projects as a parent. It represents everything I want to accomplish as a mother; it’s something simple and handmade that my children love.
For months I would say, looks like it’s time to take Fort Birthday down. And they boys would suddenly love it again. By the time we took it down, it was 14 feet wide and 4 feet tall.
I’m Leah Frances, former attorney, current remodeler, and “old” mom of twin boys. Motivated by a love of writing, I create original content about parenting, diy, product reviews, and humor. My motto is: “Learning By Doing.” My passion is sharing the adventures that ensue as I face the challenges of a stay-at-home mom of four-year-old boys. We are a multigenerational home on the rural Eastern Shore of Maryland. We try and Go Outside and Play as much as possible. And 2020 finds us Unschooling Outdoors at the Fort Birthday School for Feral Children.
I like to think I’m funny. I desperately want to be funny ON PURPOSE. It seems like I’m mostly funny by accident.
I want my sons to have a sense of humor about themselves and life. Their giggles make me stupid happy. Right now slapstick cartoons make them laugh the hardest.
Giggles will one day get replaced by eye rolls. And I’m gonna start practicing being extra embarrassing even though I secretly want to be the cool mom.
When I’m not telling an epic saga I’m happiest learning new things with a tangible result.
In 20 years I learned to race cars, practice law, quilt, crochet, re-wire a house, plaster a wall, repair my own car, design a kitchen, and to share my knowledge with other people.
For a long time this took the shape of freelance writing and DIY forums. And now it takes the shape of Fort Birthday
